FAQ's

What is a marine watermaker?

A marine watermaker is a reverse osmosis desalination system that converts seawater into clean, drinkable fresh water onboard. It forces seawater through a semi-permeable membrane under high pressure, removing salt and contaminants — giving vessels complete independence from shore-based water supplies wherever they cruise.

Output depends on the model. Compact units produce 200–800 GPD, mid-range systems 475–1,800 GPD, and high-output superyacht systems produce 2,000–4,000+ GPD. Yacht-Mate stocks Blue Water and Tecnicomar systems across this full range — contact our Fort Lauderdale team to size the right unit.

Not always. Compact DC watermakers run on 12V or 24V — suited to sailboats and solar-equipped vessels. Larger high-output systems require AC power via generator or inverter. Our team will advise on the right power configuration for your vessel and daily water requirements before you order.

Simpler modular systems can be DIY-installed if you're comfortable with marine plumbing and basic electrical. Complex framed systems on larger vessels are best installed professionally. Yacht-Mate installs and commissions all systems we supply throughout South Florida — contact us to discuss your project.

Flush membranes after each use and whenever the unit sits idle for more than a few days. Replace pre-filters on schedule and perform membrane cleaning based on run hours and water quality. Yacht-Mate stocks all replacement filters, membranes, and pump oils from our Fort Lauderdale warehouse.
